As followers of The Open Co-op will know, since 2004 we’ve had a vision of a ‘cooperating system’ called PLANET, which would support a global network of local groups and help develop a collaborative, regenerative economy.
The need for PLANET is now more urgent than ever so, our plan for 2025 is to run an outreach campaign to gather collaborators, invite feedback and input to co-design, build and launch an MVP (minimal viable product) of PLANET.
Recognizing we’re not the only ones to have come up with this kind of idea, the idea of the outreach program is to network together as many people as possible from other projects and networks so we can join forces to create more impact than we can alone – and to co-create the project together.
The United Nations has dedicated 2025 ‘The Year of Cooperatives’ and, as long standing advocates for the benefits of cooperative ownership, PLANET will be developed under a cooperative model.
The provisional plan is that PLANET will leverage the Murmurations protocol so that groups, and their work, are easily discoverable and interoperable, as part of a federated global network. But, as an open source project built on open protocols, people wouldn’t have to use the app to connect to the network because they could use any other system which adopts the same protocols.
We’ve oulined an initial development plan as well as a mind map explaining the motivation behind PLANET and are actively working on these ideas.
